I thought this assignment was really fun and exciting. I’ve interviewed people and written stories on events and people but I haven’t covered a sports game. So, getting to do that was really cool. Everything that went into it: having to learn a basic understanding of the game, practicing proper AP format, getting quotes, following the inverted pyramid, etc. The workshop was very helpful to me considering it was a rough draft–I didn’t meet the final word count requirement or check if I was following AP format. I was shocked that I didn’t receive much critical feedback from anyone other than very minor things. It was helpful getting a wide variety of opinions and set of eyes to read over my draft–I was able to take away a lot of great suggestions from the workshop. Something I definitely could improve on is my persistence because I wanted to get a quote from a specific player but was given players to talk to by the coach. So, not being afraid to reach for what I want is something I need to work on especially being in the journalism world. Overall, getting to learn the foundation of a sport I had no prior knowledge on and watching the game from the sidelines was a fun experience that has opened my eyes to the different paths I could take as a journalist.
