Two major things I took away from reading chapter 10 of Writing and Reporting News by Carole Rich were reporting tools and storytelling tools. When reporting you must keep in mind that good story telling comes from observation and gathering details. It is crucial that writers concentrate when they observe and go into detail of what they observe. You can do so by being as precise as possible. It is important to take notes on dialogue that could heavily enhance your story. You should start with the broadest noun then take it to the most specific level. Another thing Rich discusses is the 3 basic tools of storytelling, this includes: theme, descriptive writing techniques, and narrative writing techniques. These tools help reporters gather the most accurate and compelling information. Before you begin writing, develop a theme or concept that gives the story meaning to draw the readers in. Finding a good balance of description in a story is key. Having too much is considered clutter but too little will leave the reader drawing a blank. You should also be sure to limit physical descriptions and that all descriptions get equal treatment so nothing comes off the wrong way. Avoid any sexist or racist descriptions at all costs. Using these tools is beneficial in becoming a good journalist because it gives your writing credibility.
