If I’m being honest I found writing this article extremely difficult at first. I had some idea of what I was doing but it was much different than other things I have previously been tasked to write. The textbook was helpful in getting it started. The very first thing I did was brainstorm an eye catching headline. Something that would draw readers in. Now, when I had first thought of this idea of writing about men’s hockey versus women’s hockey at UNE I immediately had a friend of mine in mind on the women’s hockey team that I was eager to interview for this piece. Coming up with a lede paragraph that wasn’t too closely related to the subheadline was a bit difficult but I was able to get past that. Next, I had to find others to interview that would be a good addition to the piece. I did want to interview a men’s hockey team player as well but I had no connections to get one so I decided not to jump through hoops to get an interview. Except, after finishing my final draft I do regret not getting input from someone on the team. I really appreciated the idea of doing a workshop with everyone’s drafts in order to improve them. The feedback and suggestions were more than helpful in perfecting my article. I was very glad that even though I couldn’t get an interview with a hockey player on the men’s team I was still able to get a candid interview from a man’s point of view on this issue. Which really gave the article a nice touch. Along with this, getting some unexpected yet great words from the women’s hockey coach made it all the better, really tying it all together. Especially the way he wasn’t talking down neither the school or the men’s hockey team down. He was still able to shine a light on the women’s team which was my overall goal. I really loved writing this piece, the whole process was interesting and fun. It was nice to step out of my comfort zone a little bit.
