What Makes a Good Hard News Story?

In Writing and Communications Professor Jesse Miller’s Journalism lecture on 1/31/25 we discussed what makes a good hard news story. A good hard news story delivers critical, timely information that directly impacts readers’ lives, despite the topic. My fellow classmate, Elizabeth Huggins, junior at University of New England who majors in art and English states, “It’s about timing but also accuracy.” She believes the key to a good hard news story is characterized by its timing and accuracy. Making sure you have both sides of the story is important or else it can be seen as bias. Keeping this in mind, you must also know that the facts come before speed.

In journalism, hard news is defined by the facts. The idea is to break down the story as quickly as possible for the reader, cutting right to the chase. It’s meant to inform, not entertain, providing readers with what they need to know right now. Professor Miller tells students, “Write with as much impact as possible with as little as possible.” Inferring the way to keep a reader hooked is by keeping your story short and intriguing.

Additionally, the story’s structure is important as well. The most critical details such as who, what, when, where, and why should appear early in the piece, often in the first few paragraphs. The less urgent information follows in the later sections. A solid hard news story should prioritize the “5 W’s” (who, what, when, where, why), these elements help ground the story. Along with this, nut grafs are also crucial for good hard news. Nut Grafs provide context for the reader. While the basic facts are essential, explaining why the event or issue matters to the reader will elevate the story’s significance.

In a nutshell, a good hard news story is well timed and factual with clarity. This offers the readers what they need to know and putts that information into context. The best hard news stories leave little to no room for doubt or confusion.
