Document their work using appropriate conventions (MLA)
Once again, high school taught me differently. In high school I was taught all you needed was to state the author’s name at some point before inserting a quote. I somewhat hand understanding of MLA format, to an extent. I used MLA format in essays in high school but only adding the date, your name, your teacher/professor, the course, and putting your last name plus page number in the top right corner. ENG110 taught me there is more to it. Yes, you need all that, but you also need to cite your sources properly on a separate page at the end, and after inserting a quote you must state who said it and on what page. Another thing I was taught is the meaning and use of a signal phrase.

Here, I still didn’t quite have a complete understanding of what was required. I got understood that if I state the author before the quote then I only need to put the page number. But, I didn’t realize I just needed the number alone. A simple mistake I now know!

Rather than just throwing a quote in my writing then explaing afterwards I use a signal phrase. I Introduce the quote beforehand, providing a little explanation behind what the quote is going to say.
