  2. In Adrien Chen’s article “Unfollow,” Megan Phelps-Roper goes through a huge personal change, moving from being a strict member of the Westboro Baptist Church to someone who promotes empathy and understanding. At first, she was a strong supporter of the Church’s controversial messages, but her views began to shift once she interacted with people on social media. Chen points out that one of the most important moments for her was when a Jewish user responded to her hateful posts with kindness, forcing her to question her beliefs. This led her to rethink everything she had been taught. Phelps-Roper’s story shows how having conversations with people who think differently can really change your perspective and help you grow.
  3. Social media initially amplified Megan Phelps-Roper’s messages as a spokesperson for the Westboro Baptist Church, giving her platform and validation for her stimulating views. However the same platform also exposed her to diverse perspectives and respectful counterarguments, which challenged her beliefs. As Chen notes, interactions with people who responded to her hate with empathy led her to question and ultimately shift her views, demonstrating how social media can both reinforce and transform one’s perspectives.
  4. Megan’s most impactful conversations were all about respectful and empathetic communication. Chen points out that kind, non-confrontational messages really “got through” to her, unlike the angry responses she used to get. These calm discussions challenged her beliefs without pushing her away, showing that empathy and patience can change even the strongest opinions. Phelps-Roper’s story teaches us that fighting hate speech isn’t just about being against it. It’s about understanding and talking things through. Her experience highlights how important constructive conversations can be in bridging gaps and helping people grow, even when they have strong beliefs.
  5. If I were to meet Megan I’d ask, “How have your views on the role of social media in shaping public discourse evolved since your time with the Westboro Baptist Church, and what strategies do you think are most effective in fostering constructive dialogue?”
